How much you know about 15th August,1947 – India’s Independence Day ?

-In Feb,1947, Prime minister of Britain – Mr. Clement Attlee declared that Britain will grant full self governance to India by June,1948.

-The Viceroy , Lord Mountbatten was authorised to transfer the power to Indians.

-The Viceroy choose 15th August, 1947 as the date to transfer the power keeping the date as the mark of second anniversary of Japan’s surrender in world war-II.

-On 3rd June,1947- British Government announced that it has accepted the idea of partitioning British India into two states. This act is known as Indian Independence Act 1947.  The act got its royal assent on 18th July,1947.

-The constituent assembly of India met on 14th Aug,1947 at 11 PM at Constitution Hall at Delhi and Pt. J.L.Nehru gave their famous speech , “ Tryst with Destiny”

-On 15th Aug,1947 – A Full day programme was organized in Delhi. Starts from 8:30 AM by Swearing in ceremony of Governor General and ministers of government House and ended with the dinner at Government House.

- When people are celebrating Independence Day on 15th August, Mahtama Gandhi was not in Delhi.  He was at Calcutta and encouraging peace of Hindu and Muslim with his 24 Hours fast.

-In 1929 at Lahore Session of Indian National Congress , 26th January was declared as Independence Day which was later on adopted as Republic day as Viceroy choose the date 15th Aug for transfer of Power.

-On 15th August,1947- Prime minister – Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru raised the Indian Flag at Red Fort in Delhi and given a speech.  This tradition is still continues on this day.

-The Times of India – Newspaper gave the titled on its front page as –“ Birth Of India’s Freedom” on its 15th Aug,1947 Edition.
